How is the NVQ achieved?
The National
Vocation Qualification is based around the production of a portfolio by the candidate. This portfolio will contain evidence
to substantiate the candidates claim to be competent at the level of award chosen. The work produced in the portfolio will
be based against a set of National Standards and will be required to cover a pre determined number of areas.
A level
2 portfolio will cover four mandatory units covering resource management, leadership, working with colleagues and health and
safety, and a further two units chosen from a number of options.
A level 3 portfolio will cover four
mandatory units and three option units.
A level 4 portfolio will cover five mandatory units and three option units.
A level
5 portfolio will cover four mandatory units and 3 option units.
For more details on the specific units for each
level, visit the appropriate page for the award that you are interested in and download the profile sheet at the bottom of
the page.
The first step for the candidate will be an induction with an assessor where the whole process of the NVQ will
be explained in detail. All of the necessary paperwork will be provided for the award and profiling will be caried out to
ensure that the candidate is at the correct level of NVQ for their current working role.
It should be noted that
the candidate must currently be in the working role to undertake the relevant qualification.
Following the induction,
the assessor will arrange to make a number of visits to the candidates' workplace to assess the work produced in
their portfolio against the National Standards. These visits are generally 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the needs of the
candidate and are mainly to sign off work carried out since the last visit. Between visits, the candidate has e mail and telephone
access to the assessor for assistance on any areas that they are having difficulty with.
Once the assessor is satisfied
that the portfolio of work produced by the candidate meets the requirements of the relevant set of National Standards, the
assessor will sign off the portfolio and take it for verification. Once this process has been carried out, a certificate of
achievement will be awarded by Edexcel.
